Matt Patricia Said This…Should THEY Be Worried?

Matt Patricia, head coach of the Detroit Lions for the past 2 years with a sub-par record (9-22-1) following a coach in Jim Caldwell that had a respectable record in his first two years (18-14) in Detroit. So when it comes to a nod or vote of a coach’s potential maybe he’s not necessarily the guy you want use for a testimonial. Well, whether asked or not the New York Giants have Patricia’s assessment of their new head coach’s potential. Should they be worried?

“He’s very much used to being front and center,” Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia said Tuesday during the Senior Bowl media day. “Commanding the room, and drawing their interest, respect, and getting guys to want to be better. When you see that, and you see his natural ability to do that in front of the room, it’s easy to say to yourself ‘this guy can handle coaching the entire team.’”

Patricia will spend this week coaching the North team roster, and harkened back to why he believes Judge has the ability to follow in the footsteps of other former special teams coaches who went on to successful, Super Bowl-winning head coaching careers such as Mike Ditka, Dick Vermeil and Bill Cowher.

Experience standing in the front of the room and addressing the entire team, is obviously something that prepares Judge to take the next step from special teams coordinator, to position coach to head coach.

When several Giants players were asked about the qualities they hoped the next coach would have, leadership and the ability to elevate the expectations were top of the list.

Likewise, the ability to lead was a top of resumé bullet point Giants owner John Mara sought and believes he found in Judge.

“What came through in the interview was his poise, his confidence, his leadership, his knowledge of the game, what it takes to build a winning program,” Mara said during Judge’s introductory press conference earlier this month. “His ability to relate to players, and then of course, his work ethic. He’s a teacher, he’s a communicator, he’s somebody who demands and commands respect.”

From their time together in New England from 2012 to 2017, Judge and Patricia formed a strong personal friendship. The second-year Lions head coach has tried to give Judge a blueprint for how to make the leap from coordinator to running a team of his own.

“There’ll be challenges that are unique for him,” Patricia said. “And things we’ve talked about are things you need to understand and navigate as a first-time head coach.”

Should the New York Giants be worried that not only have they themselves made a questionable hire in Joe Judge, but the Lions coach who may or may not make it through the season is applauding the candidate?

Consider this, if the Lions shocked the world and went 16-0 under Matt Patricia, his overall record through 3 seasons would still be below Jim Caldwell’s through his 3rd season in Detroit…Matty P (25-22-1) Jim C (27-21). Guess it will depend of the back of Matthew Stafford!

If you were a Giants fan would you be worried?
