At 3-4-1, the Lions sit in an unenviable position; they’re 3rd in their division, on the bottom side of the playoff bubble for the NFC, and can’t seem to get out of their own way. Why This Could Be Te BEST Lions Season EVER! Really EVER!
Stafford’s return to the upper crust of veteran QBs has been predicated on his ability to link up with Golladay and Jones. The dueling deep threats have empowered their quarterback to raise his average target depth to a league-high 10.5 yards downfield through Week 8. That’s the highest he’s seen since SIS began recording that data in 2015.
On Sunday, he completed eight passes that sprang for 17 yards or more.
Stafford is having a renaissance at age 31 with a 64.3 percent completion rate, 19 touchdowns, five interceptions, 312 passing yards per game, and a 106 passer rating. Those are MVP-caliber numbers — you know, if he weren’t playing for a 3-4-1 team that currently has the league’s 31st-ranked defense.
Now that you have read it and understood it, this is the reason that we feel that this could be the best Lions season ever! Really ever! Imagine if coach Matt Patricia tweaked the defense just a little to where the DBs switched to zone immediately when crossing routes are ran! How many more possessions would that take away from the opposition?
How will that effect the time of possession for the Detroit Lions?
There many more tweaks to point out but that simple tweak for the remainder of the season could do something that hasn’t been done in Lions recent history, say like since 1970 at least, and that’s have a Lions QB that’s a NFL MVP!
Of course to accomplish this the team would likely have to win at least 7 of their last 8 games to make the playoffs in order for Matthew Stafford MVP numbers to have legitimate weight to actually get him the award, and it all hinges on the coach adjusting the defense ever so slightly!
